Empire Market Founder Receives 40‑Year Prison Term

Federal judges handed a 40‑year prison sentence to Raheim Hamilton, a 30‑year‑old who helped launch the now‑defunct Empire Market, one of the most prominent dark‑web drug marketplaces of the past few years.

Hamilton entered a guilty plea earlier this year to a charge of drug conspiracy and, as part of the agreement, consented to surrender more than $100 million in Bitcoin along with several Virginia properties that investigators linked to the operation.

Empire Market, which operated on the Tor network, was known for its extensive catalog of illicit substances and attracted tens of thousands of users worldwide. At its peak, the platform facilitated millions of dollars in transactions, leveraging cryptocurrency to obscure the flow of funds.

The sentence follows a coordinated law‑enforcement effort that combined the work of the FBI, DEA, and international partners. Authorities dismantled the marketplace in a multi‑agency raid, arresting several administrators and seizing digital wallets that held large quantities of cryptocurrency.

Seizing over $100 million in Bitcoin marks one of the largest cryptocurrency forfeitures tied to a darknet case, underscoring the growing ability of investigators to trace and confiscate digital assets. The move sends a clear signal to operators that anonymity on the blockchain is increasingly limited.

While Hamilton’s conviction may deter some would‑be operators, experts note that the dark‑web ecosystem is resilient, with new platforms regularly emerging. Nonetheless, the harsh sentence illustrates the U.S. justice system’s willingness to impose severe penalties on those who facilitate large‑scale drug trafficking online, and it may influence future prosecutions as authorities continue to target illicit crypto‑based commerce.
