Witcher 3 Expansion Finally Adds Geralt’s Iconic Silver Chain Thanks to Advances in Game Physics
The next expansion for CD Projekt Red's acclaimed open‑world RPG, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, will finally showcase Geralt of Rivia wearing the silver chain that fans have long associated with the monster‑hunter, a detail that was deemed technically unattainable when the original game launched.
When the original title shipped in 2015, the studio's physics and animation systems struggled with the kind of dynamic cloth simulation required for a realistically moving chain that could interact with the character’s armor and the environment. The developers had to forgo the accessory, despite its prominence in the source material and early concept art.
Jakub Rokosz, the director of the forthcoming Songs of the Past expansion, explained that the passage of more than a decade has allowed the underlying engine to evolve. "The physics and animation technology had to go a little bit forward in time," he said, noting that recent updates now support the complex collision and movement calculations needed to render the chain convincingly.
For the series’ dedicated fanbase, the addition is more than a cosmetic tweak. The silver chain has become a visual shorthand for Geralt’s role as a monster slayer, and its absence was a recurring point of discussion on forums and social media. Restoring the accessory not only deepens immersion but also demonstrates CD Projekt Red’s commitment to polishing legacy content with modern tools.
Looking ahead, the studio’s willingness to revisit and refine older titles suggests that other long‑awaited details could see the light of day. As engine capabilities continue to improve, developers may be able to address additional visual or gameplay elements that were previously out of reach, keeping classic games fresh for both new players and veterans alike.
