Ukraine Restores Full Starlink Capacity After Painful Slowdown
Ukraine announced that Starlink internet service has been fully restored after a recent slowdown that President Volodymyr Zelensky called painful and frustrating.
The reduced bandwidth, which began earlier this month, hampered civilian communications and military coordination, raising concerns about the reliability of the satellite link that has become a digital lifeline since Russia’s 2022 invasion.
Starlink, operated by SpaceX, was deployed in Ukraine to bypass destroyed ground networks, delivering high‑speed connectivity for government broadcasts, medical services and battlefield drones.
Officials traced the slowdown to a temporary bottleneck at regional ground stations. SpaceX engineers rerouted traffic and added extra capacity, allowing the network to return to its normal throughput.
Zelensky emphasized that uninterrupted internet is critical for command, control and public information, describing the interruption as “painful and frustrating” for both the armed forces and ordinary citizens.
The restoration arrives as Kyiv prepares a new phase of its counter‑offensive, relying on real‑time intelligence and secure communications. Analysts warn that any future outage could expose gaps in Ukraine’s digital defence architecture.
SpaceX has pledged to keep a dedicated bandwidth allocation for Ukraine and is exploring ways to expand satellite coverage over Eastern Europe, while NATO allies continue to assess additional support for satellite‑based connectivity in conflict zones.
