Tesla adds emergency drive-away option for Supercharger users

Tesla has introduced a new safety function that lets drivers leave a Supercharger station while the charging cable remains attached, a move aimed at preventing passengers from being trapped in an emergency.

The feature, which will roll out to newer Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y vehicles via a software update, automatically disengages the vehicle’s drive lock and allows the car to move forward or backward without first unplugging the charger. Tesla says the system monitors the vehicle’s speed and torque to avoid damaging the connector.

Tesla’s decision follows a high‑profile incident in which a shooting at a Supercharger location left drivers unable to quickly vacate the area because the cars were still tethered to the charging equipment. The incident sparked discussion about how electric‑vehicle infrastructure could become a liability in violent or hazardous situations.

According to the company, the emergency drive‑away mode can be activated through the touchscreen interface or by pressing a dedicated button on the steering wheel. Once engaged, the vehicle will display a clear on‑screen warning and limit acceleration to a safe level, ensuring the cable does not snap or overheat.

Industry analysts note that the addition of the feature could set a precedent for other EV manufacturers, many of whom have yet to address the unique safety considerations of high‑power charging stations. The move also reflects broader trends in automotive software updates, where manufacturers can introduce new capabilities without requiring physical recalls.

Tesla has not disclosed a timeline for the rollout beyond stating that eligible vehicles will receive the update over the next several weeks. The company says it will continue to monitor user feedback and refine the functionality as needed, underscoring its commitment to safety in an increasingly electrified transportation landscape.
