Study Finds 90% of VMware Users Weigh Vendor Switch Over Rising License Fees

A recent market survey indicates that nine out of ten organizations using VMware's virtualization platform are actively evaluating alternative vendors, driven primarily by escalating licensing expenses.

The research, commissioned by an industry analyst firm, sampled senior IT decision‑makers across a range of sectors. Respondents were asked about their current licensing costs, satisfaction levels, and future procurement intentions. An overwhelming 90% reported that the cost trajectory of VMware licenses is a major concern and that they are now considering other options.

Beyond price, participants highlighted the growing complexity of operating in multi‑vendor environments. Integrating VMware with other hypervisors, container orchestrators, or public‑cloud services often introduces security and management overhead that many firms find difficult to reconcile with existing policies.

Nevertheless, the study also revealed that migration is not a straightforward path. Security compliance, data sovereignty requirements, and the need to preserve workloads during transition are cited as significant barriers that keep a sizable minority from making an immediate switch.

For organizations that prefer to stay with VMware despite the cost pressure, a notable trend is the shift toward independent support contracts. Rather than relying on VMware’s own service agreements, some customers are contracting third‑party providers to handle maintenance and troubleshooting, aiming to reduce overall spend while retaining the familiar platform.

The findings arrive at a moment when the broader virtualization market is seeing intensified competition from rivals such as Microsoft Hyper‑V, Red Hat Virtualization, and increasingly from cloud‑native solutions that bundle compute, storage, and networking. Vendors are responding with more flexible subscription models and hybrid‑cloud offerings, but the perception of VMware’s pricing remains a pain point.

Analysts predict that the pressure could prompt VMware to revisit its licensing structure or expand value‑added services to retain its base. Enterprises, meanwhile, are expected to accelerate proof‑of‑concept projects with alternative technologies and to develop detailed migration roadmaps that address security and operational continuity.
