Sony adds AI‑driven upscaling to standard PS5 models
Sony has announced that its entry‑level PlayStation 5 console will now ship with Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), an AI‑based upscaling technology designed to improve visual fidelity without sacrificing performance.
QSSR uses machine‑learning algorithms to reconstruct higher‑resolution frames from lower‑resolution source material, allowing games to run at their native frame rates while still delivering sharper textures and more detailed imagery. The feature works at the system level, meaning developers can enable it without rewriting large portions of their rendering pipelines.
The first two titles to showcase the new capability are Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Both games have been updated to support QSSR, offering players a noticeable boost in clarity when the option is turned on, especially on 4K displays.
The move reflects a broader industry shift toward AI‑enhanced graphics. Competing platforms have already introduced similar technologies, and the PC market has seen a surge in AI upscalers such as NVIDIA's DLSS and AMD's FSR. By bringing a comparable solution to the base PS5, Sony aims to keep its console competitive and extend the lifespan of existing hardware.
Developers stand to benefit from the system‑wide implementation, as the upscaler can reduce the need for separate high‑resolution assets while still meeting the visual expectations of modern gamers. Sony has indicated that additional titles will receive updates to support QSSR through future firmware releases, suggesting a phased rollout rather than a one‑time upgrade.
Analysts view the addition as a strategic effort to enhance the value proposition of the standard PS5 model, which remains the most widely sold version of the console. As more games adopt the technology, Sony’s user base may see incremental improvements in visual quality across the library, potentially influencing purchase decisions for new and existing owners alike.
