University researchers have launched a study into a growing concern that passengers may use driverless ride‑hailing cars for sexual activity, prompting calls for design changes and policy safeguards.
The proliferation of robotaxis in major cities has transformed urban mobility, offering on‑demand transport without a human driver. As fleets expand, companies have focused on safety, efficiency and passenger comfort, but the possibility of private encounters inside a moving vehicle has received limited attention.
A multidisciplinary team from a leading engineering school is gathering data through surveys, incident reports and simulated scenarios to understand how and why riders might treat autonomous pods as impromptu “bang buses.” The researchers stress that their goal is to anticipate risky behavior before it becomes a systemic problem.
Experts point to several risks: the lack of a driver removes an immediate authority figure who could intervene; onboard cameras raise privacy questions; and the confined space could complicate emergency responses if a situation escalates.
Based on early findings, the scholars propose a mix of technical and regulatory measures, such as interior layouts that discourage intimate activity, motion‑sensing alerts that flag unusual passenger behavior, and clear signage that outlines prohibited conduct.
