OpenAI announced it will cease sponsoring Caltech’s annual “Mathathon” after a wave of criticism from mathematicians who argue the company’s technologies pose “destructive impacts” on the field.
The decision follows a series of public statements and open letters from leading scholars who contend that large‑language models and automated theorem‑proving tools are reshaping how research is conducted, potentially eroding traditional problem‑solving skills and altering academic incentives.
Caltech’s Mathathon, a three‑day competition that brings together undergraduate and graduate students to tackle challenging problems, has been supported by OpenAI since 2021. The partnership was originally highlighted as a way to expose emerging talent to cutting‑edge AI resources while encouraging responsible use of the technology in mathematical research.
Critics, however, have warned that the same tools that can accelerate discovery may also enable plagiarism, generate low‑quality proofs, and shift credit away from human insight. Caltech’s administration confirmed that the Mathathon will continue without OpenAI’s financial backing, noting that the event has secured alternative sponsors and that the core educational mission remains unchanged. Dean of the Division of Mathematics, Dr. Elaine Cheng, emphasized that “the competition is about fostering curiosity and collaboration, and we will adapt to maintain that spirit.”
The episode reflects a broader debate within academia about the appropriate role of artificial intelligence in knowledge creation. While some researchers embrace AI as a complementary tool for conjecture generation and proof verification, others caution that unchecked deployment could undermine methodological rigor.
