Meta to Cease Major OS Updates for Quest 2 and Pro by 2027

Meta announced today that it will stop delivering full operating system updates for its Quest 2 and Quest Pro virtual‑reality headsets, with the final update – version 213 – scheduled for March 2027.

The move ends a six‑year support period for the Quest 2, which launched in 2020, and a five‑year period for the Pro, introduced in 2022. Throughout that time, the devices have received regular OS upgrades that added features such as hand tracking, mixed‑reality passthrough and performance enhancements.

Although Meta will no longer issue new feature releases after v213, the company said it will continue to provide security patches and critical bug fixes for an as‑yet‑unspecified duration, a practice common among hardware makers to safeguard users from emerging vulnerabilities.

Analysts interpret the decision as a sign that Meta is reallocating development resources toward newer hardware, including the Quest 3, released last year, and future generations expected to incorporate more powerful processors and higher‑resolution displays.

For owners of the Quest 2 and Pro, the announcement raises concerns about the long‑term value of their devices. While the headsets will remain operational, the lack of future feature updates could limit compatibility with upcoming VR applications that rely on newer OS capabilities.

Developers are likely to adjust their roadmaps as well. Many indie studios have built games around the Quest platform’s software stack, and they may need to prioritize newer devices to take advantage of the latest SDKs and performance gains.

The broader VR market is maturing, with competition from other manufacturers and rising consumer expectations for seamless, up‑to‑date experiences. Meta’s support timeline aligns with industry norms, where flagship devices typically receive major updates for three to five years before being phased out.

Meta did not specify how long security updates will continue, but its history of patching legacy hardware suggests a limited, ongoing commitment. Users are encouraged to keep their devices current through the March 2027 deadline.

The end of OS updates for the Quest 2 and Pro underscores the rapid evolution of immersive technology and signals that the next wave of Meta’s VR strategy will revolve around newer headsets, higher fidelity and tighter integration with the company’s broader metaverse ambitions.
