NYC Puts AI on Hold for K‑12 Students Until High School

New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani unveiled a citywide directive today that will prohibit the use of artificial‑intelligence tools by students in grades two‑K through eighth for the 2026‑2027 school year, instituting a one‑year moratorium that affects roughly 600,000 public‑school learners.

The administration said the pause is intended to give educators, parents and policymakers time to assess how AI applications influence learning outcomes, academic honesty and equity among young students whose developmental stages vary widely.

Under the new rule, any AI‑powered software that generates text, images or code will be barred from classroom use and from homework assignments unless a teacher explicitly authorizes it for a specific project. Schools will be required to audit existing digital platforms and remove or disable AI features that could be accessed by students below high‑school level.

City officials estimate that the policy will reshape lesson planning for a sizable portion of the district’s elementary and middle schools. Teachers are being asked to develop alternative assignments that foster critical thinking without relying on generative tools, while districts will need to provide professional‑development sessions to help staff navigate the change.

Reactions have been mixed. Some parent groups applaud the precautionary step, arguing that early exposure to AI could blur the line between student effort and machine assistance. Conversely, a number of education technologists warn that the ban may limit opportunities for students to acquire digital literacy skills that are increasingly essential in higher education and the workforce.

The mayor’s office said the moratorium will be revisited after its twelve‑month term, with the possibility of extending, adjusting or lifting the restrictions based on findings from ongoing research and stakeholder feedback.
