NYC Implements One-Year AI Ban for Elementary Classrooms, Limits Access for High Schools

NYC Department of Education announced a policy restricting artificial intelligence tools in schools. The ban covers pre‑kindergarten through eighth grade and will last for a year. High school students will still be allowed limited use under certain conditions.

The decision follows growing concerns among educators and parents about the rapid integration of AI chatbots, image generators, and writing assistants. Officials cite potential for academic dishonesty, privacy issues, and unequal access as reasons for a cautious approach.
