Cloudflare to Offer Free Global Certificate Authority, Paving Way for Post‑Quantum Web Security

Cloudflare announced plans to become a public Certificate Authority, a move that would allow the company to issue free, automatically‑renewed TLS certificates to any website on the Internet.

The service would extend the model popularized by Let's Encrypt, but with Cloudflare's massive edge network and integration into its suite of performance and security tools, the company says the new CA could simplify encryption for millions of sites that currently lack HTTPS.

By issuing certificates directly, Cloudflare aims to eliminate the need for site owners to obtain and install keys from third‑party authorities. The process would be fully automated through Cloudflare's dashboard and API, meaning even small blogs or hobby projects could secure traffic with a single click.

Beyond immediate deployment, the firm is using the initiative to lay groundwork for post‑quantum cryptography. As quantum computers advance, current encryption algorithms could become vulnerable; Cloudflare plans to experiment with quantum‑resistant key exchange methods alongside its traditional RSA and ECC offerings.

Industry observers have noted the potential benefits and risks. Security experts praise the prospect of broader HTTPS adoption, while some caution that concentrating certificate issuance in a single provider could raise concerns about centralization and trust. Cloudflare has emphasized its commitment to transparency and compliance with existing CA/Browser Forum standards.

The rollout is expected to begin later this year, with full public availability slated for early next year. If successful, the service could reshape how the web secures data, making encrypted connections the default rather than the exception, and positioning the Internet for the next generation of cryptographic challenges.
