Apple revives ceramic cases for its latest Series 12 smartwatch
Apple announced that its upcoming Series 12 Watch will again be available with a ceramic case, marking the first time the premium material has appeared on the device since the Series 5 in 2019.
The new option comes in two colour treatments – a pearl‑white finish and a night‑blue hue – both touted for their durability and resistance to scratches. Ceramic, a material previously reserved for Apple’s most expensive watch configurations, is known for its high cost and the glossy, premium look it imparts.
Since the Series 5, Apple has focused on aluminum, stainless steel and, more recently, titanium for the bulk of its lineup, positioning ceramic as a niche offering for buyers willing to pay a premium. The reintroduction suggests the company believes demand for a high‑end, scratch‑proof finish remains strong among consumers who view the Apple Watch as both a fashion accessory and a health‑tracking device.
Industry analysts note that the move could help Apple differentiate the Series 12 in an increasingly crowded wearables market, where competitors such as Samsung and Garmin have expanded their own premium material options. By offering ceramic alongside its standard materials, Apple may be aiming to capture a segment of buyers who prioritize long‑term aesthetics and are less price‑sensitive.
While Apple has not disclosed pricing for the ceramic configurations, previous iterations have carried a significant markup over comparable aluminum or stainless‑steel models. The addition of the pearl‑white and night‑blue finishes also expands the aesthetic palette, allowing users to match the watch more closely with personal style or wardrobe choices.
Looking ahead, the ceramic re‑entry could signal a broader strategy of rotating premium materials across future Apple Watch generations, especially as the company continues to push health‑focused features and tighter integration with its ecosystem. Consumers and market watchers will be watching closely to see whether the ceramic option translates into measurable sales uplift for the Series 12.
