Apple has released a detailed explanation of the iPhone 18’s new photo‑verification feature, describing how the built‑in Apple Reference Image is used to certify that a picture is genuine and unaltered.
The process begins the moment a photo is captured: the phone records a secure snapshot of raw sensor data, creates a cryptographic hash, and stores this fingerprint alongside a device‑generated reference image in the Secure Enclave. The reference image, which cannot be reconstructed into the original picture, serves as a tamper‑evident anchor that can later be compared against any copy of the photo.
When a user or an authorized third party wants to confirm an image’s authenticity, the iPhone can produce a verification token that links the photo’s hash to the stored reference image. The token can be shared without exposing the original image or any personal metadata, allowing recipients to verify that the picture matches the device‑generated reference without gaining access to the user’s private data.
