According to the company's internal report, the five cases were flagged as "biological misuse" after automated monitoring detected queries that matched patterns associated with bioweapon development. The individuals or groups behind the requests sought Claude's assistance in modeling viral mutations and analyzing venom properties, activities that fall well outside the model's intended commercial and research applications.

Anthropic said its safety infrastructure, which includes real‑time content screening and anomaly detection, identified the suspicious activity early enough to intervene before any substantive output was generated. The firm disabled the relevant user accounts and escalated the incidents to appropriate law‑enforcement agencies, though it did not disclose the identities of the actors involved.

The disclosure comes amid growing alarm in the security community that advanced AI tools could lower the barrier to creating or improving biological weapons.
