Zoox Suspends Atlanta Autonomous‑Vehicle Testing After Employees Report Toxic Gas Symptoms
Amazon-owned autonomous‑vehicle developer Zoox has halted operations of its test fleet in Atlanta following reports that several workers experienced symptoms consistent with exposure to a toxic gas.
The company said it initiated an internal investigation after an employee filed a complaint with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The complaint prompted Zoox to suspend all on‑road testing in the Georgia market while it assesses the situation.
According to the filing, the affected staff members reported headaches, nausea and respiratory irritation while working in a facility that services the fleet. Zooth’s statement indicated that the alleged exposure occurred in a confined area where the vehicles are charged and maintained, though the exact substance has not been disclosed.
Zoox, which was acquired by Amazon in 2020, has been expanding its autonomous‑driving program across several U.S. cities. The Atlanta site was part of a broader rollout that includes pilot projects in California and Nevada. The pause in testing comes at a time when the industry is under heightened scrutiny over safety protocols and worker protection.
Regulators typically require employers to address potential hazards promptly, and OSHA investigations can lead to citations or mandated corrective actions. While Zoox has not confirmed whether OSHA has opened a formal case, the company pledged cooperation with any inquiry and emphasized its commitment to employee health and safety.
Analysts note that the incident could delay Zoox’s timeline for deploying its robotaxi service in the Southeast. The company has previously highlighted its “zero‑emissions” electric platform as a selling point, and any perception of environmental or safety lapses may affect public and investor confidence. Zoox has not provided a target date for resuming testing, indicating that the restart will depend on the outcome of its internal review and any regulatory guidance.
