WhatsApp adds link‑based event invites for users without the app

WhatsApp is expanding its event‑planning tools by allowing users to send invitation links to people who do not have the messenger installed. The new capability lets a host generate a shareable URL when creating an event, which can be copied and sent through email, SMS or any other communication channel.

Unlike the existing event feature that requires all participants to be on WhatsApp, the link works for anyone with a web browser. Recipients can view the event details, RSVP, and see updates without needing to download the app, lowering the barrier for group coordination.

The rollout comes as part of Meta’s broader effort to keep WhatsApp competitive against rivals such as Telegram and Signal, which already support cross‑platform invitations for groups and channels. By simplifying the process of bringing new participants into a conversation, the company hopes to retain existing users and attract occasional users who may otherwise turn to alternative platforms for event planning.

Privacy advocates note that the feature could raise concerns about data exposure, since a public URL can be forwarded beyond the intended circle. WhatsApp says the link is unique to each event and can be revoked by the organizer at any time, and that all communications remain end‑to‑end encrypted for participants who are on the app.

Industry analysts view the move as a response to user feedback that the current event workflow feels closed. Small businesses, families, and community groups have often struggled to coordinate gatherings when not every member uses WhatsApp. The link‑based invites aim to streamline those interactions while keeping the core messaging experience intact.

The feature is being rolled out gradually over the coming weeks, initially to Android and iOS users in select markets before a global release. As the functionality spreads, observers will watch how quickly it is adopted and whether it influences the platform’s overall engagement metrics.
