Deadly floods sweep Istanbul as record rainfall hits city, officials urge residents to stay indoors

Heavy rainstorms that broke an 84-year record in Istanbul have left two people dead, according to the provincial governor, prompting authorities to warn citizens to remain at home unless travel is essential.

The downpour, described by meteorologists as the most intense in eight decades, inundated low‑lying neighborhoods, overwhelmed drainage systems and caused streets to become impassable. Water surged into residential areas, trapping occupants and forcing emergency crews to conduct rescue operations throughout the city.

Local rescue teams, aided by volunteers, responded swiftly to calls for help, pulling individuals from flooded homes and transporting the injured to nearby hospitals. In the wake of the disaster, the governor issued a public advisory urging residents to avoid unnecessary outings, keep windows shut, and follow instructions from civil protection officials.

Istanbul’s unique position straddling the Bosphorus and its proximity to the Black Sea make it particularly susceptible to flash flooding, especially when intense rain coincides with high tides. The city has faced similar challenges in the past, but climate experts note that increasingly erratic weather patterns are amplifying the risk of such extreme events.

Authorities are monitoring weather forecasts for additional precipitation and have mobilized additional resources to clear debris, reinforce vulnerable infrastructure and provide temporary shelter for displaced families. Officials emphasized that the situation remains fluid and that further updates will be issued as rescue and recovery efforts continue.
