Researchers in Turkey have unveiled an artificial‑intelligence system capable of forecasting the body weight of broiler chickens up to three weeks in advance, achieving a prediction accuracy of 93 percent. The breakthrough promises to give poultry producers a more reliable tool for managing growth trajectories and optimizing feed use.

Weight monitoring is a cornerstone of modern poultry farming. By tracking how quickly birds gain mass, farmers can gauge feed conversion efficiency—how effectively feed is turned into meat—and spot irregularities that may signal disease or uneven growth across a flock. Traditionally, such data are gathered through periodic weighing, a labor‑intensive process that can miss short‑term fluctuations.

The Turkish AI model was trained on extensive datasets that combine daily feed intake, environmental conditions, and historical weight records. Machine‑learning algorithms identified patterns linking these variables to future weight outcomes, allowing the system to generate forecasts well before the birds reach market age. Validation against real‑world measurements confirmed the 93 percent accuracy figure.

Industry analysts note that earlier insight into expected body weight can improve feed formulation strategies, reduce waste, and lower the risk of over‑ or under‑feeding. In turn, better feed efficiency translates into lower production costs and a smaller environmental footprint, as less feed is required per kilogram of meat produced.

Beyond economic benefits, the technology may aid disease management. Sudden deviations between predicted and actual weights often precede health issues; early detection enables swift veterinary intervention, potentially limiting outbreaks that could devastate a flock.

While the system is currently demonstrated in research settings, the developers plan field trials with commercial operations later this year. If the trials confirm the laboratory results, the AI could become a standard component of precision poultry farming, complementing existing sensor networks and management software.
