High Coffee Intake Tied to Reduced Hip Bone Density in Elderly Women, Study Shows
A decade‑long study of almost 10,000 women aged 55 and older has found that drinking more than five cups of coffee a day may be linked to lower hip bone density, while regular tea consumption appears to have a modest protective effect. The research, which tracked participants for ten years, adds nuance to earlier debates about caffeine’s impact on skeletal health.
The investigators measured hip bone mineral density at multiple intervals, noting that women who reported drinking three to five cups of coffee daily showed no significant difference from non‑coffee drinkers. However, those who exceeded five cups consistently recorded a measurable decline in bone density, a factor that could raise the risk of fractures later in life. In contrast, women who consumed tea on a regular basis demonstrated a slight but statistically notable increase in hip bone density compared to those who avoided both beverages.
These findings arrive amid growing public interest in lifestyle factors that influence osteoporosis, a condition that affects millions of older adults worldwide. While calcium and vitamin D intake, physical activity, and hormonal status remain the primary determinants of bone strength, diet‑derived caffeine has long been suspected of interfering with calcium absorption. The new data suggest that moderate coffee intake—defined in the study as up to five cups per day—does not pose a clear threat, but habitual heavy consumption could contribute to bone loss over time.
Researchers caution that the study’s observational design cannot prove causation, and they acknowledge potential confounding variables such as overall diet quality, smoking status, and use of bone‑affecting medications. Nevertheless, the large sample size and extended follow‑up lend credibility to the association.
