Isle of Man’s Ancient Bogs Get a Boost as Volunteers Rewet 20,000 Acres
Conservation work on the Isle of Man’s upland peatlands has entered a decisive phase, with Sarah Hickey and her volunteer crew leading efforts to restore nearly 20,000 acres of ancient bogs that have been draining for decades.
The peatlands, formed over millennia, act as natural carbon sinks, trapping greenhouse gases and supporting a suite of specialized plants and insects. Their preservation is increasingly seen as a frontline defense against climate change, while also safeguarding a distinctive part of the island’s natural heritage.
Restoration on the ground is a methodical process. Workers lay low‑tech barriers to block historic drainage channels, allowing water to re‑accumulate and the peat to re‑saturate. Vegetation is managed to favour native mosses and sedges, and the terrain, often slick with mud, demands careful, slow progress to avoid damaging the fragile substrate.
The project faces a range of obstacles. Variable weather patterns can undo re‑wetting efforts, and securing steady funding requires demonstrating tangible outcomes over many years. Monitoring equipment is being installed to track water levels and carbon flux, providing data that will inform future phases and help justify continued investment.
Beyond climate benefits, healthy bogs enhance biodiversity, offering habitat for rare bird species and supporting traditional foraging practices. They also present educational and eco‑tourism opportunities, drawing visitors interested in the island’s geological and ecological story.
Looking ahead, Hickey’s team plans to expand the re‑wetting network, collaborate with academic partners for long‑term research, and engage more local volunteers. The slow, muddy work may lack immediacy, but its cumulative impact could secure the Isle of Man’s peatlands for generations to come.
