During an August morning stay at a five‑star hotel in Lisbon last year, an American couple preparing for a European river cruise discovered an unexpected guest: a kissing bug, a blood‑sucking insect typically associated with the Americas. The find sparked curiosity among hotel staff and prompted a swift response from local health officials.

The couple, who had booked the luxury accommodation as a pre‑cruise stopover, reported the insect to the front desk after noticing its distinctive dark body and elongated head. Hotel management contacted a regional entomology laboratory, which confirmed the specimen as a member of the Triatominae subfamily, commonly known as kissing bugs.

Kissing bugs are best known for transmitting Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite that causes Chagas disease, a condition endemic to parts of Central and South America.
