European Startup Secures $450 Million to Build Reusable Spacecraft, Aiming to Rival SpaceX
Exploration Company (TEC), a European aerospace venture, announced it has closed a $450 million Series C financing round, the largest ever raised at this stage by a European space firm.
The capital infusion is earmarked for the development of a family of fully reusable launch vehicles, a technology path that has been dominated by U.S. player SpaceX for the past decade.
Founded only a few years ago, TEC has positioned itself as a challenger in a market where reusability is seen as the key to lowering launch costs and expanding access to orbit. By designing spacecraft that can return to Earth, refurbish, and launch again, the company hopes to offer commercial and governmental customers a more affordable alternative to traditional expendable rockets.
The funding round was led by a group of private investors and institutional backers who see Europe’s fragmented launch ecosystem as ripe for consolidation. While the identities of the participants were not disclosed, the size of the round signals confidence in TEC’s technical roadmap and its potential to capture market share from established players.

TEC plans to begin ground testing of key propulsion and recovery systems within the next twelve months, followed by a series of suborbital flights to validate the reusability concept. Regulatory approvals and the development of a reliable turnaround process will be critical milestones before the first orbital launch, which the company expects to attempt in the mid‑2020s.
The sizable Series C round underscores a growing appetite among investors for space‑related ventures that promise both technological innovation and commercial viability.
