Tesla reports 43% profit drop as Optimus robot production ramps up in California

Tesla announced a steep 43% decline in profit for the latest quarter, while revenue remained essentially unchanged and operating costs surged as the company accelerated its push on the Optimus humanoid robot, artificial‑intelligence projects and autonomous‑driving development.

The earnings release showed flat revenue compared with the same period a year earlier, reflecting a slowdown in vehicle sales and service income. At the same time, expenses climbed sharply, driven by heightened spending on robotics, AI research and the refinement of self‑driving software.

A key factor behind the cost increase is the start of mass production of the Optimus robot at Tesla’s newly opened California facility. The plant, unveiled earlier this year, is intended to transition the robot from prototype to commercial scale, a move Tesla says could eventually supplement its manufacturing workforce and create a new line of revenue.

Industry analysts point out that the robot venture remains in its infancy, with technical challenges and market demand still uncertain. Nonetheless, CEO Elon Musk has repeatedly described Optimus as a long‑term growth engine, suggesting that the unit could eventually generate billions once production reaches full capacity.

Spending on AI and autonomous‑driving technology also added to the expense tally. Tesla continues to develop its Full Self‑Driving (FSD) suite, seeking regulatory clearance and broader consumer uptake while contending with rival firms that are rapidly advancing comparable capabilities.

Investors responded with a mixed reaction; the stock slipped after the profit warning, yet some shareholders expressed confidence that the strategic bets on robotics and AI may pay off over time. Tesla indicated that upcoming quarters will focus on improving margins as the Optimus line achieves efficiency targets and AI‑related revenue begins to materialize.
