Spotify launches 'Taste Profile' to give U.S. Premium users a peek inside its recommendation engine

Spotify is rolling out a new feature called Taste Profile for Premium subscribers in the United States, allowing listeners to see how the streaming service categorises their musical preferences and to reshape recommendations using everyday language.

The tool appears in the app’s settings menu and presents a visual breakdown of the genres, moods and artist clusters that the algorithm currently associates with each user. Listeners can type simple commands such as “more upbeat pop” or “less hip‑hop” and the system will adjust the weighting of future suggestions accordingly.

While Spotify’s recommendation system has long blended collaborative filtering with acoustic analysis, critics have complained that the process remains opaque. By exposing the underlying profile, the company hopes to give users more control and to address broader concerns about filter bubbles and algorithmic transparency.

The introduction of Taste Profile follows a wider industry shift toward user‑controlled personalization, with rivals like Apple Music and YouTube Music testing comparable interfaces. Analysts view the move as a way for Spotify to differentiate its premium tier and to bolster subscriber loyalty amid intense competition.

Spotify has not released data on adoption rates or projected impact on listening habits. The company indicated that the feature will be expanded to additional markets later in the year, suggesting a phased rollout designed to collect feedback and fine‑tune the experience.

Should the experiment prove popular, Taste Profile could set a precedent for more interactive recommendation systems across digital media, giving audiences clearer insight into the algorithms that shape their daily entertainment choices.
