Vandalism‑Triggered Oil Leak Claims Thirteen Birds, Injures Others

Earlier this week a vandalised oil tank at a private residence released a substantial amount of petroleum, resulting in the deaths of thirteen birds and leaving several more injured, local wildlife officials said.

The spill was discovered after neighbours reported a dark, oily sheen spreading across a nearby garden and onto a small pond. Investigators determined that the tank had been deliberately tampered with, causing the fuel to escape and flow into the surrounding habitat where it came into contact with the birds.

Oil exposure is especially lethal for avian species; the substance coats feathers, disrupting insulation and the ability to fly, while ingestion can cause internal organ damage. The deceased birds were identified as a mixture of waterfowl and songbirds, and the injured individuals are being treated for burns and respiratory distress caused by inhaling fumes.

Emergency responders, together with local wildlife rehabilitation centres, have initiated a clean‑up operation, using absorbent barriers and specialized detergents to remove the contaminant from the water and soil. Veterinarians are providing supportive care to the rescued birds, with the goal of releasing any that recover back into the wild.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of urban wildlife to illegal activities and underscores the need for stricter security around fuel storage. Authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the vandalism, and environmental groups are calling for increased public awareness about the ecological risks posed by oil spills, even on a small scale.
