National Trust Flags Imminent Species Loss in Snowdonia Valley
The National Trust has issued a stark warning that a number of native species are teetering on the edge of disappearance in a remote valley within Eryri National Park, Wales' largest protected landscape.
According to the Trust's recent assessment, the valley's unique combination of upland heath, riverine habitats and ancient woodlands supports a suite of plants, insects and birds that are now classified as "at risk of vanishing". The designation reflects a convergence of pressures that have intensified over recent decades, including altered grazing regimes, climate‑driven shifts in moisture patterns and the spread of non‑native vegetation.
Eryri, known internationally as Snowdonia, attracts millions of visitors each year and forms a cornerstone of Wales' natural heritage. While the park's dramatic peaks and glacial valleys are celebrated, the lower‑lying valleys often host the most delicate ecological assemblages.
