UK Government Allocates £30 Million to Expand Shetland Spaceport Infrastructure
The United Kingdom has pledged £30 million to the Shetland spaceport project, earmarking the funds for the construction of two additional launchpads. The investment, announced by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, marks the latest step in a multi‑year effort to turn the remote archipelago into a hub for commercial satellite launches.
Located on the northern coast of Scotland, the Shetland site was selected for its clear flight corridors over sparsely populated sea lanes and its proximity to existing maritime infrastructure. Initial development work, funded by regional and private partners, has already delivered a primary launchpad capable of handling small‑to‑medium payloads. The new pads will broaden the range of launch vehicle sizes the facility can accommodate, aiming to attract a wider spectrum of commercial and research customers.
