Scientists Survey Alpine Fungi in Norway's Dryas Heath, Eyeing New Species

A team of mycologists has embarked on an intensive field survey of the alpine Dryas heath in Norway's mountains, spending several days in August cataloguing the region's fungal life and hoping to document species that have never been formally described.

The Dryas heath, a low‑lying carpet of dwarf shrubs that clings to rocky, wind‑scoured slopes above the treeline, is a classic example of an Arctic‑alpine ecosystem. Its harsh conditions and short growing season have kept many of its microscopic inhabitants out of the scientific spotlight, despite the habitat’s importance for soil formation and nutrient cycling.

Researchers are employing a mix of traditional and modern techniques: systematic transect walks to locate fruiting bodies, collection of soil and litter samples, and rapid DNA barcoding in a portable laboratory. The timing of the expedition aligns with the brief window in late summer when many fungi produce visible mushrooms, making identification in the field feasible.

Understanding the hidden diversity of these fungi matters beyond academic curiosity. Fungal species play vital roles in decomposing organic matter, forming symbiotic relationships with plants, and influencing carbon storage—processes that are especially sensitive to climate change in high‑latitude environments. New taxa may also hold biochemical compounds of interest for medicine or industry.

After the fieldwork, specimens will be curated in national herbaria, described in detail, and compared against global databases. The team plans to publish their findings in peer‑reviewed journals and to establish a baseline for long‑term monitoring of fungal communities in the face of warming temperatures and shifting alpine habitats.
