Swiss Milk Tested Positive for Tire-Derived Rubber Compounds, Study Finds
A recent scientific analysis has detected trace amounts of chemicals associated with tire wear in milk produced by Swiss dairy farms, highlighting a previously under‑examined pathway for rubber pollutants to enter the human food chain.
Researchers estimate that roughly six million tonnes of rubber particles are released worldwide each year from vehicle tires and road surfaces. These microscopic fragments travel through the atmosphere, are washed into waterways, and can become embedded in soils, especially where farms border busy roads or receive runoff‑laden irrigation.
In the Swiss study, milk samples collected from farms situated within a few kilometres of major highways showed measurable levels of the same polymer‑based substances that originate from tire degradation. The investigators linked the presence of these compounds to the proximity of dairy operations to traffic corridors and to the use of fertilisers that may carry airborne particles onto grazing fields.
The findings add to a growing body of evidence that road‑derived pollutants are not confined to soil and water but can also be transferred to livestock through feed and pasture. While the detected concentrations are low, the research community emphasizes the need for further monitoring to assess any potential health implications for consumers and to inform agricultural best practices.
Regulators in Switzerland and across Europe are now reviewing the data to determine whether existing food‑safety standards should be adjusted. Meanwhile, scientists suggest that mitigation strategies—such as vegetative buffer strips, improved runoff management, and alternative road‑wear materials—could reduce the movement of rubber particles from highways onto farmlands, thereby limiting their entry into dairy products.
