Reddit to Move Toward Mandatory Login as Search Visits Decline

Reddit said it will transition to a predominantly logged‑in experience after a noticeable drop in traffic arriving from search engines, a change it attributes to the rise of AI‑driven search tools.

The site, which has long allowed users to browse without an account, will start prompting visitors to sign in before they can view most content, a step aimed at keeping its community engaged and better managing user data.

Industry observers note that AI assistants that summarize web pages have reduced the number of clicks that traditionally sent users to Reddit, leading to a steady decline in search‑derived visits over recent months.

Requiring authentication is expected to give Reddit richer data for ad targeting while also helping to curb bot activity and low‑quality traffic that can strain moderation resources.

The strategy mirrors a broader shift among social platforms toward tighter access controls as they seek to protect communities and monetize a more committed user base amid a tightening advertising market.

Analysts will watch how the policy affects overall traffic and engagement; Reddit has not announced a firm rollout schedule but frames the move as a necessary adaptation to a rapidly evolving digital information ecosystem.
