Study Finds Native Species Can Regrow After Port Hills Blaze, Highlighting Fire‑Trap Threat from Invasive Grasses
New research conducted by Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha and the University of Canterbury has confirmed that the February 2024 wildfire that swept through Christchurch's Port Hills left a mixed legacy: while some invasive grasses intensified fire risk, several young native trees and shrubs demonstrated a surprising capacity to resprout after severe damage.
The interdisciplinary team examined post‑fire regeneration patterns across multiple burn sites, focusing on the ability of native vegetation to recover without human intervention. Their field surveys revealed that species such as mānuka, kānuka and certain native ferns were able to produce new shoots from surviving root systems, even after crowns were scorched. This regenerative response, the researchers noted, could help stabilize soils and accelerate ecological succession if native plantings are supported.
Conversely, the study underscored the role of non‑native grasses—particularly species like kikuyu and ryegrass—in creating a “fire trap.” These fast‑growing, highly flammable grasses formed dense mats that not only carried the initial blaze but also continue to promote higher fire intensity in subsequent seasons. Their rapid recovery after the fire, compared with the slower regrowth of some natives, means that the landscape remains predisposed to future ignitions.
Understanding this dynamic is critical for land‑management authorities, who have been grappling with how to mitigate wildfire risk in the region. The researchers recommend targeted removal of invasive grass patches combined with strategic planting of fire‑resilient native species. Such measures could break the feedback loop where grasses fuel fires that, in turn, clear space for more grass dominance.
City officials and conservation groups have taken note of the findings, planning pilot restoration projects on the hillsides that integrate controlled grazing, mechanical grass removal and the sowing of native seed mixes. While the study provides a hopeful note about native resilience, it also warns that without decisive action to curb invasive grasses, the Port Hills may remain a tinderbox for future wildfires. The research team plans to monitor the sites over the next few years to assess long‑term recovery and the effectiveness of proposed management strategies.
