Pentagon Integrates ChatGPT, Grok and Gemini Into Unified AI Portal

The Department of Defense announced on Thursday that its internal AI hub will now host custom versions of OpenAI's ChatGPT and SpaceXAI's Grok alongside Google's Gemini, creating a single point of access for a range of generative‑AI tools used by service members and analysts.

The move expands the Pentagon's existing AI portal, which was launched last year to streamline the evaluation and deployment of artificial‑intelligence applications across the armed forces. By adding the two new models, the department aims to give its personnel broader options for tasks such as data summarization, language translation, and rapid information synthesis while maintaining a controlled environment that meets security standards.

According to the statement, the ChatGPT variant will be a purpose‑built deployment of OpenAI's large‑language model, configured to operate within the Defense Department's restricted network and to comply with classified data handling protocols. The Grok integration follows a similar approach, adapting SpaceXAI's conversational engine for use in mission planning and technical support scenarios. Both versions will run on government‑owned or vetted cloud infrastructure to limit exposure to external threats.

Google's Gemini, already present on the portal, will continue to serve as a benchmark and a complementary tool for users who prefer its multimodal capabilities. The inclusion of three distinct models reflects the department's strategy of avoiding reliance on a single vendor, thereby fostering competition and resilience.
