Nvidia's DLSS 5 Update Softens Visual Intrusiveness and Performance Drain, Yet Some Glitches Remain

Nvidia unveiled the latest revision of its Deep Learning Super Sampling technology, DLSS 5, promising a more subtle visual presence and lower impact on frame rates. The company said the new iteration trims the aggressive sharpening and halo effects that some gamers complained about in earlier releases, while preserving the AI‑driven upscaling benefits that have become a selling point for the RTX line.

DLSS, introduced in 2018, uses neural networks running on dedicated tensor cores to reconstruct higher‑resolution images from a lower‑resolution source. Over successive versions the feature has expanded from a simple upscaler to include frame generation and higher quality modes, but each upgrade has also drawn criticism for taxing GPU resources and sometimes producing unnatural image artifacts.

The DLSS 5 patch, rolled out through Nvidia's driver update in early October, reportedly reduces the computational load by streamlining the post‑process pipeline. Early benchmarks shared by the hardware community show a modest gain of a few frames per second in demanding titles when the new mode is enabled, compared with the previous DLSS 4 implementation.

Despite the performance improvement, the update does not eliminate all visual quirks. Users who can enable DLSS 5 on older or lower‑end RTX cards have reported occasional shimmering textures, ghosting around moving objects, or a slight loss of detail in very dark scenes. The issues appear to be linked to the algorithm's attempt to balance sharpness with speed, a trade‑off that Nvidia acknowledges remains in development.

The mixed reception reflects a broader tension in the PC gaming market, where developers and hardware makers strive to push graphical fidelity without sacrificing smooth gameplay. As more titles adopt DLSS as a default option, the pressure on Nvidia to refine the technology grows, especially as competitors roll out their own AI‑upscaling solutions.

Nvidia has indicated that further refinements are planned for the coming months, with the goal of ironing out the remaining artifacts while keeping the performance budget low. For now, gamers who prioritize frame rate over absolute visual perfection may find the new DLSS 5 mode a worthwhile compromise, while enthusiasts seeking the highest image quality might continue to toggle the feature off until the next update arrives.
