Newly Identified Fungi Multiply Thailand’s Known Flower‑Associated Species Tenfold
Scientists surveying gardens and natural meadows in northern Thailand have documented sixteen previously unknown fungal species living inside the blossoms of both cultivated and wild plants. The discovery, which more than quintupled the count of flower‑dwelling fungi recorded in the country, appears in the peer‑reviewed journal IMA Fungus.
The research team, comprising mycologists from Thai universities and international collaborators, collected samples from a range of flowering hosts—including ornamental roses, marigolds and native wildflowers—over several seasons. Microscopic examination and DNA sequencing revealed distinct lineages that did not match any existing entries in global fungal databases, confirming their status as new to science.
Fungi that inhabit flower tissues can influence pollination dynamics, seed set and plant health, yet they remain among the least studied components of plant microbiomes. By occupying the interior of petals and stamens, these organisms may affect scent production, nectar composition or pathogen resistance, interactions that are crucial for both natural ecosystems and agricultural systems.
The find underscores how much of Southeast Asia’s fungal diversity remains undocumented. Tropical climates and rich plant assemblages provide fertile ground for undiscovered microbes, but limited taxonomic resources have left many niches unexplored. Cataloguing such hidden diversity not only refines our understanding of ecosystem function but also opens avenues for biotechnological research, as novel fungi can produce unique enzymes or bioactive compounds.
Going forward, the authors recommend expanded surveys across different habitats and seasons, as well as deeper investigations into the ecological roles of these flower‑associated fungi. Their work adds a substantial piece to the puzzle of Thailand’s biodiversity and highlights the importance of integrating fungal studies into broader conservation and agricultural strategies.
