NASA Imaging Technique Uncovers Faded Murals on Angkor Wat’s Central Tower

A newly adapted NASA image‑enhancement method has revealed previously invisible wall paintings high on the central tower of Cambodia’s Angkor Wat, showing scenes of horseback riders and a traditional musical ensemble that have long been hidden by age and grime.

The technique, originally designed to sharpen and clarify satellite photographs for scientific observation, was applied to high‑resolution aerial imagery of the temple complex. By adjusting contrast, reducing atmospheric distortion, and employing advanced super‑resolution algorithms, researchers were able to amplify subtle color variations in the stonework that correspond to the ancient frescoes.

Angkor Wat, a 12th‑century Hindu‑to‑Buddhist temple and UNESCO World Heritage site, is renowned for its intricate bas‑reliefs and towering spires. While many of its stone carvings have been studied extensively, the interior wall paintings have suffered from centuries of exposure, humidity, and human traffic, leaving them nearly invisible to the naked eye. The newly revealed murals depict dynamic scenes of cavalry and musicians, offering fresh visual evidence of the cultural and artistic practices of the Khmer Empire.

Archaeologists and conservationists say the discovery underscores the growing role of remote‑sensing technologies in heritage preservation. Similar methods have previously helped map hidden structures beneath jungle canopies in Central America and locate lost Roman roads in Europe. By identifying the exact locations and extents of the faded artworks, the Angkor authorities can prioritize conservation measures and potentially restore the paintings before further deterioration occurs.

The find also has implications for tourism and education. With thousands of visitors passing the central tower daily, many have never noticed the hidden scenes. Guided tours may soon incorporate the new images, enriching visitor experience and raising awareness of the site’s artistic diversity. Researchers plan to extend the NASA‑derived processing to other parts of the Angkor complex, hoping to uncover additional obscured features and deepen understanding of the empire’s visual legacy.
