Simultaneously, its exoplanet program will conduct a statistical census of planets ranging from Earth‑size to gas giants, using both transit and microlensing techniques. The telescope will also investigate the early universe by mapping the large‑scale structure of cosmic filaments and voids, offering clues about the conditions that prevailed shortly after the Big Bang.

The mission is a collaborative effort involving NASA, the European Space Agency, and a network of academic institutions worldwide. Data collected by Roman will be released to the scientific community through a series of public archives, with the first major data release expected within two years of operation. Researchers anticipate that the unprecedented depth and coverage of the survey will spur a wave of new studies, from refining cosmological models to identifying targets for future missions such as the James Webb Space Telescope.

Looking ahead, mission planners expect the telescope to operate for at least five years, with a possible extension based on performance and fuel reserves. The success of the launch will be a key milestone for NASA’s broader strategy to explore fundamental questions about the universe’s composition, its origins, and the potential for life beyond Earth.
