Microsoft Ends Support for Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro Editions, Urging Users to Upgrade

Microsoft announced today that the Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro editions have officially reached their end‑of‑support date, meaning the operating system will no longer receive monthly security patches or preview updates for non‑security fixes.

The 24H2 release, rolled out in the second half of 2024, is part of Microsoft’s “Windows as a Service” model in which feature updates are delivered continuously rather than through major, standalone OS launches. It introduced a range of visual refinements, performance tweaks, and new productivity tools that built on the core Windows 11 experience first introduced in 2021.

Under Microsoft’s published lifecycle policy, Home and Pro editions are supported for 24 months after a feature update’s general availability. After that period, only the Enterprise and Education editions continue to receive extended support for up to three years. The 24H2 Home and Pro builds have now surpassed that 24‑month window, prompting the cessation of all regular updates.

The termination of updates carries practical consequences for both consumers and organizations. Devices that remain on the unsupported version will no longer get the monthly security patches that address newly discovered vulnerabilities, leaving them more exposed to malware and other threats. For businesses, running an out‑of‑date OS can also jeopardize regulatory compliance and increase the risk of data breaches.

Microsoft recommends that users transition to the latest Windows 11 build as soon as possible, using the built‑in Windows Update service or, for larger deployments, the company’s enterprise‑grade deployment tools. IT administrators are advised to audit their device inventories, prioritize the upgrade of critical systems, and communicate the change to end users to avoid disruption.

Ending support for a specific Windows version is a routine part of Microsoft’s update cadence, but the move highlights the importance of staying current with the operating system’s lifecycle. As newer feature updates continue to roll out, users who keep their devices up to date will benefit from the latest security enhancements, performance improvements, and feature set that Microsoft continues to develop.
