Bolivia Sanctuary Yields First New Wild Cat Species in Over a Century
Scientists have officially described a previously unknown wild cat species that had been living undetected within a Bolivian wildlife sanctuary, marking the first addition to the family Felidae in more than 100 years.
The animal, a diminutive spotted feline, had been observed by sanctuary staff for several years but was assumed to be a variant of an existing species. Detailed morphological examination revealed distinctive coat patterns, ear shape, and skull measurements that set it apart from its nearest relatives.
