A research team at the University of Malaga has unveiled a diagnostic platform that uses magnetic nanoparticles to identify allergic reactions to beta‑lactam antibiotics, such as amoxicillin, with a reported sensitivity of 98 percent in initial laboratory evaluations.
The interdisciplinary group, comprising experts in nanotechnology, immunology and clinical medicine, designed the assay to bind specifically to IgE antibodies that trigger hypersensitivity to penicillin‑type drugs. By coating tiny magnetic particles with allergen fragments, the test can isolate and quantify patient antibodies in a matter of minutes, offering a faster alternative to conventional skin‑prick or serum‑specific IgE tests that often require hours and can produce ambiguous results.
Beta‑lactam antibiotics remain the most frequently prescribed drug class worldwide, yet adverse reactions affect a sizable portion of the population. Accurate diagnosis is critical because mislabeling a patient as allergic can lead to the use of broader‑spectrum antibiotics, contributing to antimicrobial resistance and higher healthcare costs. The new nanoparticle‑based method aims to reduce false‑positive rates and provide clinicians with a reliable tool for decision‑making at the point of care.
In the study, blood samples from volunteers with known amoxicillin allergy and from non‑allergic controls were processed through the magnetic assay. The researchers reported that the test correctly identified allergic individuals in 98 out of 100 cases, while maintaining a low false‑negative rate. Although the data are preliminary and derived from a controlled laboratory setting, the authors emphasize that the technology’s speed, minimal sample requirement, and scalability could facilitate broader clinical adoption after larger‑scale validation.
Looking ahead, the team plans to expand trials to include other beta‑lactam drugs, assess performance across diverse patient demographics, and explore integration with portable diagnostic devices.
