Low Vitamin D Linked to Higher Post‑Surgical Pain in Breast Cancer Patients, Study Finds
A new analysis of women undergoing mastectomy suggests that insufficient vitamin D may intensify postoperative discomfort, with deficient patients facing roughly three times the odds of moderate to severe pain in the first day after surgery.
The investigation tracked 184 female patients who received mastectomies for breast cancer. Researchers measured serum vitamin D levels before the operation and recorded pain scores during the initial 24‑hour recovery period. Those classified as vitamin D deficient reported significantly higher pain intensity compared with women whose levels were within the normal range.
Vitamin D, traditionally associated with bone health, also influences nerve function and inflammation. Prior studies have hinted at a relationship between low vitamin D status and chronic pain syndromes, but evidence linking the nutrient to acute surgical pain has been limited. This study adds to a growing body of literature that positions vitamin D as a potential modulator of pain perception.
Post‑mastectomy pain is a critical concern for both patients and clinicians, as it can affect mobility, wound healing, and overall quality of life during a vulnerable period. While multimodal analgesia protocols aim to mitigate discomfort, the findings raise the possibility that pre‑operative nutritional assessment could become a routine component of surgical preparation.
Experts caution that the results, while compelling, stem from a single‑center cohort and should be validated through larger, randomized trials. If subsequent research confirms the association, guidelines may evolve to include vitamin D screening and supplementation as part of standard pre‑operative care for breast cancer surgery.
In the meantime, physicians are encouraged to consider patients' nutritional status when planning pain management strategies. For individuals diagnosed with breast cancer, ensuring adequate vitamin D—through sunlight exposure, diet, or supplements—might offer an additional, low‑risk avenue to improve postoperative recovery outcomes.
