Rising Japanese Biomass Demand Fuels New Wave of Indonesian Deforestation

Satellite monitoring released this week shows a sharp increase in forest clearing across Indonesia as the country expands production of wood pellets and chips destined for Japan's growing biomass power sector.

Analysts say the latest imagery reveals large swaths of previously intact tropical forest being converted into timber plantations and processing sites, a trend that follows earlier reports linking Indonesia's wood‑fuel exports to carbon‑intensive energy projects abroad.

Japan, which has set ambitious targets to replace coal with renewable sources, has turned to biomass as a seemingly low‑carbon alternative. Government subsidies and a favorable feed‑in tariff have spurred utilities to import large quantities of wood‑based fuel, prompting Indonesian exporters to ramp up output to meet the demand.

The expansion comes at a cost to Indonesia's biodiversity. The archipelago hosts some of the world’s richest ecosystems, and the newly cleared areas include habitats for endangered species such as the Sumatran orangutan and the Javan rhinoceros. Indigenous communities, whose livelihoods depend on forest resources, also face displacement and loss of cultural sites.

Environmental groups warn that the carbon savings promised by biomass may be offset by the emissions released when mature forests are felled. The carbon debt incurred during forest conversion can take decades to repay, undermining climate‑change mitigation goals.

Indonesian authorities acknowledge the pressure but point to existing regulations intended to limit illegal logging and promote sustainable sourcing. However, enforcement challenges and the profitability of export contracts have complicated compliance, prompting calls for stricter certification and traceability standards.

Looking ahead, both governments face a dilemma: balancing Japan’s renewable‑energy ambitions with Indonesia’s forest‑conservation commitments. International watchdogs suggest that transparent supply chains, third‑party verification, and investment in alternative renewable technologies could help curb the deforestation cycle while still supporting energy transitions."
