Cable Congestion Near Mumbai Threatens India's Internet Expansion
India's rapid digital expansion is confronting a hidden vulnerability: a majority of its international submarine cables are clustered within a few kilometres of Mumbai's Versova beach, creating a single point of failure for the nation's internet traffic.
As the world's second‑largest internet market, India has seen data consumption soar, driven by mobile broadband, streaming services, and a burgeoning tech sector. The country now relies on 18 intercontinental fibre‑optic cables to connect to global networks, but at least 13 of those cables make landfall within a six‑kilometre stretch of the western coast near Versova.
The concentration is not accidental. Historically, Mumbai emerged as the premier gateway for undersea links because of its deep‑water ports, established telecom infrastructure, and proximity to major financial and commercial hubs. Engineers and investors have long favoured the site for its logistical convenience, leading to successive generations of cables being routed to the same shoreline.
However, such density amplifies exposure to a range of hazards. Anchors, fishing gear, and seabed activities can inadvertently damage multiple lines at once, while natural events like monsoonal storms or seismic activity pose additional threats. A single cut could disrupt services for millions, echoing past incidents where cable breaks caused noticeable slowdowns across the region.
Industry analysts and government officials are now urging diversification of landing points. Plans under discussion include developing alternative coastal sites in Gujarat and the eastern seaboard, as well as bolstering redundancy through satellite back‑ups and terrestrial fibre routes. Private operators are also exploring deeper‑water branching units that can spread risk away from crowded shorelines.
Addressing the bottleneck is becoming essential to sustain India's internet growth trajectory. As the country pushes toward wider 5G rollout, increased cloud adoption, and greater participation in the global digital economy, ensuring a resilient and geographically dispersed cable network will be key to avoiding future disruptions and maintaining competitive edge.
