Instagram Brings Reels to Apple TV with New ‘Instagram for TV’ App

Meta's Instagram is extending its reach beyond smartphones by launching a dedicated app for Apple TV, allowing users to view Reels, live streams and other video content on a larger screen. The rollout follows a testing phase that began in December of last year, when a version of the platform optimized for big‑screen viewing was first trialed.

During the initial trial, Instagram focused on its short‑form video formats, aiming to replicate the mobile experience while taking advantage of the higher resolution and broader display area of televisions. Early testers reported that the interface automatically enlarged thumbnails and adjusted playback controls for remote navigation, making the transition from phone to couch more seamless.

The full release, announced in June, adds the Instagram for TV app to the Apple TV App Store. Users can download the app, sign in with their existing Instagram accounts, and browse Reels, IGTV videos and live broadcasts without needing to mirror their phone screens. The move aligns with Meta’s broader strategy to capture more time spent in the living‑room media ecosystem, where competitors such as TikTok and YouTube have already introduced TV‑compatible experiences.

Industry observers note that the integration could benefit both creators and advertisers. Creators gain a new venue to showcase their content to audiences who prefer a television setting, potentially increasing watch time and engagement metrics. Advertisers may also find value in the expanded ad inventory, as Instagram’s video ads can now appear on a platform that commands higher average view durations.

While the app currently supports only Apple TV hardware, Meta has hinted that similar experiences could appear on other smart‑TV platforms in the future. Analysts will be watching adoption rates and user engagement figures to gauge whether the shift to the living‑room will meaningfully augment Instagram’s overall usage. For now, the launch represents a clear step toward making Instagram’s video ecosystem more versatile and accessible across a range of consumer devices.
