Hurricane Lowell battered the western islands of Hawaii on Tuesday, unleashing fierce winds, torrential rain and flash flooding that left roughly 91% of one island without electricity as the storm continued its trek across the Pacific.
The Category‑1 cyclone arrived with sustained winds exceeding 80 miles per hour, toppling trees, snapping power lines and inundating low‑lying areas. Emergency managers reported that the combination of wind‑driven debris and rapidly rising water forced several coastal roads to close, hampering evacuation routes and delaying cleanup efforts.
Hawaii’s western islands, which include Niʻihau and parts of Kauai, are particularly vulnerable to tropical systems because of their exposed position and limited infrastructure. While the state has become more accustomed to tropical storms in recent years, Lowell marks one of the strongest hurricanes to impact the region in the past decade, prompting officials to activate the state’s emergency operations center and mobilize the National Guard for potential rescue missions.
Power outages were the most immediate consequence, with utility crews confirming that 91% of customers on the affected island lost service shortly after the storm’s eye passed. Restoration teams have been working around the clock, prioritizing critical facilities such as hospitals, water treatment plants and shelters. Officials warned that full restoration could take several days, citing the extensive damage to the island’s transmission network and the difficulty of accessing remote neighborhoods.
Beyond the immediate disruption, meteorologists emphasized that Lowell’s lingering presence could exacerbate existing flood risks. Heavy rainfall totals of more than six inches were recorded in some locations, raising concerns about landslides in the islands’ steep terrain. The National Weather Service issued a series of flood advisories, urging residents to stay off flooded roads and to be prepared for possible after‑effects even as the storm moved farther offshore.
Looking ahead, forecasters expect Lowell to weaken as it encounters cooler sea surface temperatures and increased wind shear in the open ocean. Nevertheless, the storm’s trajectory keeps it within the path of other Hawaiian islands, prompting authorities to remain on high alert.
