Study Identifies Sustainable Clearcutting Limit to Protect Boreal Forest Birds
A research team from the University of Jyväskylä in Finland has pinpointed the ecological ceiling for clearcutting in boreal forests, marking the first time such a threshold has been quantified. The findings indicate that preserving bird species that rely on old‑growth forest habitats hinges on keeping timber harvests within a defined limit, beyond which populations begin to falter.
The scientists examined extensive bird monitoring records alongside forest management data across the region's expansive coniferous woodlands. By correlating changes in bird abundance with varying degrees of timber removal, they were able to isolate a clearcutting proportion that separates sustainable practices from those that jeopardize habitat specialists.
Birds that have evolved to thrive in mature, structurally complex forests—such as certain woodpeckers, owls and forest thrushes—showed marked declines when clearcutting exceeded the identified threshold. Conversely, species adaptable to younger or more open stands remained relatively stable, underscoring the particular vulnerability of old‑growth dependents.
These results carry weight for forest policy and industry in the boreal zone, which accounts for a significant share of the world’s timber supply and carbon storage. Managers can now reference a scientifically grounded limit when drafting harvest plans, balancing economic interests with the need to maintain biodiversity and ecosystem services.
Looking ahead, the researchers stress that the threshold should be integrated into broader landscape‑level strategies, including the preservation of uncut refuges and the strategic placement of retention patches within logged areas.
