Higher Cutting Height Slashes Bluegrass Contamination in Tall Fescue Seed, Study Finds
New research from Oregon indicates that raising the cutting height of tall fescue during harvest can dramatically cut the amount of annual bluegrass that ends up mixed with the seed, offering a straightforward way to lower cleaning expenses for seed producers.
Annual bluegrass (Poa annua) is a pervasive weed that often infiltrates tall fescue seed lots, creating quality concerns for landscapers and homeowners who rely on pure seed for lawns. Traditional seed cleaning processes are costly and can diminish overall seed yield, prompting growers to look for agronomic tweaks that reduce contamination at the source.
The study compared two harvesting approaches: a low cut set at 5 centimeters (about 2 inches) and a higher cut at 28 centimeters (roughly 11 inches). Researchers collected seed samples from each treatment and measured the proportion of bluegrass seeds present. The higher cut consistently produced seed batches with far fewer bluegrass seeds, demonstrating that leaving the crop taller during harvest helps keep the weed’s seed heads out of the combine.
While the experiment was limited in scope, its findings have immediate relevance for the seed industry. By adjusting equipment to a higher cutting height, growers can reduce the volume of bluegrass that must be removed later, potentially streamlining processing lines and preserving more of the desirable tall fescue seed.
Cost implications are noteworthy. Seed cleaning equipment, labor and additional handling steps all add to the price of the final product. A reduction in contaminant load translates directly into lower operating expenses and may allow seed companies to offer more competitive pricing without sacrificing quality.
Researchers caution that the optimal cutting height may vary with local conditions, soil types and equipment capabilities. Further field trials are planned to confirm the results across different regions and to assess any trade‑offs, such as impacts on overall seed yield or disease pressure.
