Google has signed a power purchase agreement for 400 megawatts of enhanced geothermal energy from renewable developer Fervo, marking a significant step in the tech giant's push to power its data centers with low‑carbon sources.

The deal, announced this week, could eventually scale to one gigawatt of geothermal capacity. At that scale, the electricity would be sufficient to meet the power demands of a large artificial‑intelligence data center in Utah, a state that is emerging as a hub for both geothermal resources and high‑performance computing.

Enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) differ from conventional geothermal projects by creating artificial reservoirs through hydraulic fracturing, allowing heat extraction from rock formations that lack natural water flow. Fervo has been a pioneer in commercializing this technology, and the partnership with Google provides a high‑profile validation of its commercial viability.

Google’s commitment aligns with its broader sustainability agenda, which includes a pledge to operate on carbon‑free energy around the clock by 2030. While the initial 400‑MW contract is already in place, both parties have signaled intent to expand the arrangement to a full gigawatt.
