Google Photos rolls out AI‑powered virtual wardrobe to Android and iOS
Google Photos has expanded its AI‑driven "Clueless" feature, letting users automatically generate a digital closet from images stored in the service. After a limited release to Android devices in June, the tool is now available to anyone with the app on Android or iOS.
The feature scans a user's photo library, identifies clothing items, and groups them into categories such as tops, bottoms, shoes, and accessories. Users can then browse outfits, mix and match pieces, and even receive style suggestions generated by the underlying machine‑learning models.
Google first unveiled the concept as a prototype in early 2023, positioning it as a response to growing consumer interest in AI‑enhanced personal organization tools. By leveraging the company's extensive image‑recognition technology, the virtual closet aims to reduce the time people spend searching for garments and to inspire new combinations without the need for manual tagging.
Industry analysts note that the rollout arrives at a moment when several competitors are experimenting with similar capabilities, from dedicated fashion‑tech startups to major smartphone manufacturers embedding AI into their camera apps. Google’s advantage lies in the scale of its photo repository, which provides a rich data set for training the models that power the wardrobe feature.
Privacy advocates have raised questions about how the visual data is processed and stored. Google assures users that the analysis occurs on-device where possible and that no personal images are used to train the broader AI system without explicit consent. The company also provides an option to disable the feature in the app's settings.
Looking ahead, Google hints that future updates may incorporate shopping links, seasonal recommendations, and deeper integration with other Google services such as Calendar and Assistant. For now, the virtual closet represents the latest step in the tech giant's broader push to embed generative AI across everyday consumer experiences.
