Autumn’s Night Sky Offers Meteor Showers, a Supermoon and More

Stargazers across the Northern Hemisphere have a packed agenda this fall, with several meteor showers, a striking supermoon and a series of planetary alignments lighting up the darkness between September and November.

The Orionids, a comet‑derived shower that peaks around October 21, will be the first major display. With the radiant positioned in the constellation Orion, observers can expect up to 20 meteors per hour under clear, moonless conditions. The shower’s particles travel at roughly 66 kilometers per second, creating bright, fast‑moving streaks that often leave brief trails.

Later in the month, the Draconids make a brief appearance on the night of October 8‑9. Though historically modest, the 2024 outburst is projected to deliver 10‑15 meteors per hour, especially for those situated away from city lights. The shower’s source is comet 21P/Giacobini‑Zinner, and its meteors tend to be slower, offering a chance to see faint, lingering glows.

Mid‑November brings the Leonids, a meteor shower famous for its occasional spectacular storms. While the 2024 peak around November 17 is expected to yield around 10 meteors per hour, the event coincides with a full Moon, which will dim fainter meteors but still allow the brighter fireballs to be visible.

Perhaps the most photogenic event of the season is the November supermoon, occurring on the night of November 14. The Moon will appear up to 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than a typical full Moon because it will be near its perigee, the point in its orbit closest to Earth. Its proximity makes it an excellent target for both casual observers and photographers, especially when paired with the backdrop of the early‑rising Milky Way.

In addition to these transient phenomena, the autumn months provide a favorable window for planetary viewing. Jupiter and Saturn will climb higher in the evening sky, while Mercury emerges from solar glare in early November, offering a rare glimpse of the “evening star” just after sunset. These planets sit near the ecliptic, making them easy to spot with the naked eye or a modest telescope.

For those hoping to maximize their viewing experience, experts advise heading to locations with minimal artificial illumination, allowing the Milky Way’s dense core to become visible as early as late August and remain prominent through October. Checking local weather forecasts and using astronomy apps to track the timing of each event can further enhance the chances of a successful observation.

As the season progresses, the combination of meteor showers, a bright supermoon and clear planetary vistas underscores why autumn remains a favorite period for amateur astronomers. With the right preparation, enthusiasts can enjoy a series of celestial spectacles that not only enrich personal appreciation of the night sky but also connect them to a tradition of sky‑watching that spans cultures and centuries.
